Three Summits In
Sep 29, 2026
I'm in Houston for HOOD Summit, a few hours before the keynote. Third one they've run, and the thing I keep coming back to isn't any single announcement — it's that a brokerage decided it needed an annual conference at all.
That's a developer-conference move. Apple has WWDC because it has a platform and a population of people building on it. Brokerages historically had neither; they had customers, and customers got a quarterly statement. Robinhood put a keynote on a stage in front of its own users and started shipping to them like a software company ships to developers.
The pattern in what gets announced
October 2024, Miami. The first one, and the most clearly strategic. Robinhood Legend — a real desktop platform for active traders — plus futures and index options, the latter through a Cboe partnership at $0.35 a contract for Gold members. That was the year Robinhood stopped being the app where you buy three shares of something and started being a place you could actually trade from.
September 2025, Las Vegas. Robinhood Social, Cortex for AI-driven indicators and scans, short selling, futures and Simulated Returns inside Legend, up to ten separate investing accounts, index options moving toward round-the-clock. Over 25 million livestream views in the first day — which is its own signal about whether the conference idea worked.
Look at the two lists together and the strategy is hard to miss. Every year they take one more thing that used to require a real brokerage account somewhere else, and put it in the app.
Read it that way and none of it is a feature list. It's a series of reasons to close the other account. The professional toolkit, disassembled and shipped a piece at a time, each piece announced on a stage.
What I'm listening for tonight
They've called this one Engines of Creation, which is a Drexler reference and probably not an accident — his book is about building things atom by atom from the bottom up. Make of that what you will.
I'll be listening for three things. How far Cortex has actually come, because "AI-powered indicators" is easy to announce and hard to make good. Whether Social turned into something people use or something that shipped and went quiet. And what Bitstamp is doing for them — they closed that acquisition for $200M in June of last year and spent the Vegas keynote describing what it would bring: tighter spreads, faster settlement, institutional-grade custody. It's had a year to show up.
The pattern says there'll be at least one more piece of the professional stack in tonight's keynote. I'd like to be surprised by which one.
Written before the keynote. I'll come back and mark up what I got wrong.
